Soil erosion washes away $8 billion annually, which greatly impacts agricultural crops. Worldwide, food production is reduced by 33.7 million tons of food. Soil erosion inflates food prices, in particular that of paddy rice, but also wheat and other staple foods. More water is withdrawn for agriculture, with an average 1.6% increase worldwide. Southeast Asia in particular is using more water because of the intense irrigation practices required for rice production. (📸: Getty)

India's Narendra Modi has been locked in for a second term. India’s long election season is drawing to a close, and the party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi did better than anyone expected. In other words, Modi is staying put just as the market expected. India has been drama-free for years, with market attention focused on Russia sanctions, China trade wars and a radical shift in governments in Brazil. India has been even keel under Modi. Yet despite solid economic growth, India hasn’t generated much in the way of returns under Modi. Investors have been disappointed. More at the 🔗 in our bio. (📸: AP Photo/Rajesh Kumar Singh)

Evelyn Nesbit, known as a 20th Century fashion icon known for setting the standard of female beauty, is now standing watch over New York’s NoMad area. The 100-foot mural celebrating the NoMad icon and the history of the neighborhood during the Gilded Age was done by artist Tristan Eaton, in partnership with The Kaufman Organization, who worked closely with local historical and landmark preservation experts to ensure the mural would accurately and appropriately represent Nesbit’s story and the history of the NoMad area.

Ever wondered how your brain responds when the beat drops? Researchers are starting to understand which brain areas are involved in listening to a familiar aspect of dance music. This new study describes which brain regions are activated when you wait for the beat to drop - and immediately afterwards. The EEG measures the activity of different brain regions. In this particular study, some brain regions were more active before the drop than after, while others became more active just after the drop. All of these regions are usually involved in different aspects of music processing (such as pitch or rhythm), but they have different roles. In this study, the brain areas that were active just before the drop are also linked to experiencing tension and anticipation. (📸: Casey Budd/Pixabay)

David Marcus, a leading investor in Vivendi, owner of Universal Music Group, is predicting a formidable change in the music industry in a move that could spark a war between content platforms. Marcus says, "There are three large content providers in the world: Warner Music, Sony, and Universal Music, which is owned by Vivendi, who have announced that they will sell up to 50%.” He continues, "The sale of Universal Music Group is potentially the first domino to fall in a wave of change in how music is distributed. If content and distribution merge, it could create businesses that are more focused than before. They would have so much more power in leveraging all channels available to them to get their content to the ears of their customers.” (📸: Getty)

In response to the restrictive abortion bills passed in Alabama and Missouri, a flood of money has poured into pro-choice and women’s health organizations. Among the biggest donations is a $1 million gift to Planned Parenthood from Tumblr founder David Karp. “I don’t think I have anything to add that would be 1/1,000,000th as impactful as the stories women have been sharing this week,” Karp said in a statement announcing the donation. “But please count me as one man standing with you in this fight.” (📸: AP Photo/Butch Dill)

The most common use of helium in the world is to fill single-use balloons with it, as demonstrated by the vendors shown here in Warsaw, Poland. There is a global helium shortage, and every single act of wastefulness such as this not only makes the problem worse, it permanently removes the used helium from the Earth entirely. There's a natural resource found beneath Earth's surface that's been building up for hundreds of millions of years. It plays a pivotal role in some of society's most important scientific and medical applications, from MRI machines to superconductivity to particle accelerators to the creation of the strongest magnetic fields on Earth. There is no known substitute for this unique resource; it's truly irreplaceable. There is no good way to synthesize this essential ingredient in any sort of substantial quantity, either. We have only what has naturally built up over our planet's natural geologic history. The resource in question? The lightest inert gas found in nature: helium. Instead of mining, storing, and distributing it for these much-needed medical and scientific uses, we're squandering it on balloons and squeaky voices. (📸: Jaap Arriens/NurPhoto via Getty Images)

Two physicists are hunting more than 600 uranium cubes from Nazi Germany’s failed WWII nuclear program. In the chaotic final days of the war, some of the uranium cubes ended up on the black market, others found their way to the U.S., and still others simply scattered to the winds. One of them found its way to University of Maryland physicist Timothy Koeth’s desk in 2013, kicking off a search for its origins and an international hunt for the rest. The cube has voids from bubbles, signs of a rough casting process common in early uranium processing. More at the 🔗 in our bio. (📸: John T. Consoli/University of Maryland)
