Happy #FirstDayofSpring! 🌻🌲 We’re getting lost in the beauty and intricacy of “Peasant House at Éragny," Camille Pissarro, 1884. See it in the Ahmanson building, level 2.

Sri Lankan Buddhist practices often involve honoring various deities who were originally assimilated from popular, folk, and Indian traditions in order to undergird Buddhism’s relevance to the everyday lives and goals of worshipers. ⁣⠀
⁣⠀
⁣⠀
Among them are the Brahmanical gods and astrological deities depicted on these panels. The panels were likely used as door or window shutters and are painted on both sides. See them for yourself in "The Jeweled Isle: Art from Sri Lanka" on view through June 23. Be sure to pick up our special in-gallery guide for detailed information on the panels. ⁣⠀

“For lack of a better analogy, it was like what Miles Davis meant to people like John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock—Miles Davis helped them find their own voice and that’s how Charles White did with me— he helped me find my own voice.” — Richard Wyatt Jr. ⁣⠀

Visit #CharlesWhiteLifeModel Saturdays from 1pm-4pm to learn more about Charles White's legacy as a teacher to artists like Wyatt. On view at our satellite gallery at Charles White Elementary School. ⁣⠀

From our Unframed blog: The light—arguably the focal point of the painting—draws the viewer into contemplation, and the expression on Magdalene's face, the placement of her head into her hand, and the radiating glow from the candle also encourages the consideration of measured thought. ⁣See Georges de la Tour's "The Magdalen with the Smoking Flame" in @toromeandbacklacma before the exhibition closes March 17.

"The installation of "Power of Pattern: Central Asian Ikats from the David and Elizabeth Reisbord Collection" began on a gray winter day. Over a period of two weeks, about 60 robes, wall hangings, and accessories were installed, transforming the empty white gallery into a vibrant, jewel-toned space.⁣⠀
⁣⠀
As one of the textile conservators working on this exhibition, I had the privilege of documenting, assessing, and treating a portion of these textiles." ⁣⠀

"Untitled" (2018) marks a carefully considered turn to the abstract for Zeng Fanzhi, who emerged in the 1990s with his tense, brooding paintings of hospital scenes and urban Chinese men hiding their faces behind masks. This painting, one in a series of four new abstract landscapes, is monumental in size at nearly nine by 12 feet. See it in the Ahmanson building lobby. ⁣⠀ Images: ⁣⠀

Cheers to the weekend! 🍸This Venetian goblet, circa 1575-1600, was made using a first-century BC technique of blown glass. It updates the method by incorporating small, twisted canes of opaque glass to achieve linear intricacy. Although with the invention of glassblowing, glass objects became more common in households after the first century, these later, carefully decorated examples show wealth, refinement, and beauty, qualities that were highly covered by collectors. ⁣⠀
