In the green room mirror before my book event last week, worrying about my looks (is my hair shaped right? are my legs too big to cross like this on stage?) and the event (who is in the audience? what do they want to hear?) I centered myself with my go-to prayer: ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ “Help me to see what You see. And help them to see You.” Isn’t that the most that we can ask for? To see ourselves through the eyes of One who isn’t focused on our hair or our weight but instead on our heart? And for others to see not just our flesh and bones, not just our own flawed presentation and natural talent but instead the love and wisdom of God that is perfect and knows just what is needed in any room? ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ So here’s the tip: Want to feel better about yourself AND also perform better? It’s simple. Look at your reflection & surrender it all. #youdeservethetruth

I remember working on my book proposal in 2015 watching @luvvie share every detail of her publishing journey as she was taking the ride of her life w her bestselling book “I’m Judging You”. Last night was a full circle moment, as we shared the stage and talked about my baby “You Deserve the Truth”, and the process: what it feels like to share your work with the world, knowing your worth, making space for others in an industry that doesn’t quite know what to do with you, owning your voice and yes, your story. I’m grateful not just for Luvvie but for every woman, every sister, who is daring to chart her own path - and tell the truth about what it costs. We are each other’s inspiration and support. For a long time, my love for myself was conditional: on achievement, on living up to ideals, on realizing my potential. What looked like self-love was actually just a dogged belief in my capacity for greatness, an infatuation with a future me. How much time do we spend chasing what we can become as a way of undervaluing who we are in the present? How comfortable are we with loving - and even liking - ourselves in “as is” condition? It takes some practice. But trust me: It is worth the work to love yourself now. You, in your current, raw imperfect form, are worthy.

As I face an endless barrage of messages screaming of lack and insufficiency, remind me that I am strong, capable and already in possession of every good thing. I thank You that through Your Spirit, there is nothing that I can’t do with what is already mine and just as You made me. Amen.

Over here being the boss of my own mind, my own spirit, and my own energy (reporting to God as my CEO). Despite growing up as a fiercely independent “bossy” girl and loving the culture that is finally celebrating us as strong, confident women in business, politics and everywhere else, I’ve learned that the leadership that matters most is the one that you exercise over your own self. Discipline, focus, integrity when no one is watching, spiritual maturity...That’s the kind of “girlboss” I strive to be.
