“Inclusive health means that people with intellectual disabilities get the care they need and medical professionals look past our disabilities. Small changes bring big results. For instance, [medical professionals] can talk directly to us, truly listen, and look past the disability to treat us as people rather than a diagnosis. I challenge you to consider how many individuals you have in your [care] who are like me—who want to make healthy changes, but aren’t sure where to start. How many people are waiting for the opportunity to be their best selves?” -Nell Coonen-Korte, Health Messenger, @sominnesota // Join the revolution for healthcare inlusion {link in bio} #InclusiveHealth

r668erfubar1 (24 dni)Special Olympics Management, the @nba and @nhl have suspended their seasons as of today.... they are the most physically fit humans on the planet. Your athletes live and work with some of the most medically fragile people in our country. Why have you not suspended all activities, events, and practices nationwide You are playing w people’s lives and health, you’re not just playing games anymore. The housemates of your athletes have not signed any special olympics waivers. I imagine if they were to contract Covid19 that had been transmitted amongst your athlete’s you would be liable for any permanent damages and medical bills. Do the right thing for everyone.

"When I was in first grade, Loretta Claiborne came to visit my class. She showed us her gold medals from @specialolympics victories in long-distance running. She demonstrated her martial arts skills that she had gained on her way to earning a black belt. She spoke to us in Russian, one of several languages she had taught herself while traveling the globe competing and meeting fellow athletes. Needless to say, my classmates and I were impressed. So, when she walked towards the door to leave and turned to say, 'One last thing,' we were hanging on her every word.

She asked, "Do you all know the rhyme ‘Sticks and Stones?'"
We said, 'Of course!' and proceeded to say it back to her: “Sticks and stone may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” We were proud that we knew that lesson already.

For the 1st time that afternoon, Loretta grew serious and said, “You know that’s the silliest saying there is. I’ve been in fights and I’ve broken bones, but the only pain that has stuck with me all these years is the pain caused by words. That’s because those words hurt my heart. And there is one word that hurt the most because it haunted me as a kid and ever since. That word is ‘retard’ or ‘retarded.’ Whatever you do, please never use that word and be careful about the words you chose. Your words are powerful.” Then, she smiled at us & walked out the door.

badgerfan88 (32 dni)Spread the word to end the word. My son is special needs and a Special Olympics gold medalist. My daughter has been very active with Best Buddies. People who don’t understand use this word and don’t understand how hurtful it is. Thank you for this story and hopefully more people can share it.

"All my life, I’ve been little. I was born smaller than other babies. I learnt slower than others. While other children spoke their first words in their first or second year, it took me double the time. Even today, as a 15-year-old, I am much smaller in stature compared to other teenagers. People who don’t know me think I’m still a child.

Growing up, I attended a mainstream school but struggled to cope. School was a confusing and disconcerting place for me. I hardly spoke and had no friends. I cried every day on my way to school. It became so difficult that my parents eventually took me out of school. For the next five years, I stayed at home. In the small town where I live, in the state of Haryana, there are few options for children like me.

When I was 6, Dad died, leaving Mum to take care of my younger brother and I. Mum sold tea to make ends meet. She put up with so much to make sure we survived, not just financially but emotionally too. Callous remarks from neighbours did not help. One time, I fell while playing, and a neighbour commented, “Your son has no brain, he can’t speak, and now he has even hurt himself.” The comment hurt Mum deeply, but it made her determined to find a school where I would be accepted. Eventually, she found the Vatsalya Special School, for children with intellectual disabilities. Although she could not afford the school fees, it never stopped Mum from fighting to give me the best she could. The school agreed to waive the fees, enabling me to continue my education.

There, I was introduced to sports through the Special Olympics movement. I took to skating and swimming. Sports has changed my life. It taught me discipline and gave me confidence. While I never dared to leave the house on my own before, I am now independent enough to go to school and training by myself." -Tanshu, @soasiapacific // #ChooseToInclude
