The photos have become familiar: Dozens of smashed homes after a major hurricane like Dorian in the Bahamas, with one or two standing strong in the midst of them.
How does that happen The answer lies in a combination of design, materials and stringent building codes.
Take for example Kenneth Langston's house on Elbow Cay, part of the Abacos Islands. The house was built in 2009 by Deltec, a company that specializes in hurricane-resistant and environmentally friendly homes. Deltec uses a circular design and special roofline that the company says increases the building's ability to withstand high winds. Several others besides Langston's survived Dorian, and a whole community of Deltec homes escaped the wrath of Hurricane Michael in the Florida panhandle last year.
