the irony of being named best in dc while facing displacement in a city more concerned with mass development than its cultural health. i have always been in awe of the dichotomy that pervades this city. the seat of world power paired with poverty. the world renowned arts institutions and the plethora of artists who are underemployed and lack simple work space. in the last 16 months, we have engaged the community around displacement of small businesses and creative entrepreneurs (artists) in a rapidly gentrifying washington dc. this morning, i accompanied my peers and fellow tenants to court as we face eviction. despite our successes and commitment to the people of this city, we find ourselves several million dollars short of having a place in this city. my heart is heavy. it is increasingly difficult to exist with any level of dignity unless you are wealthy. friends, i ask you to join @nomadyard + the artists of 411 new york ave ne at the final community discussion as the 1st ever cultural plan is being shaped by the dc office of planning in partnership with the commission on arts and humanities. it is imperative that we communicate the hardship of #gentrification as it affects our neighbors, our friends and our favorite businesses.
tonight's ne quadrant community meeting will start at 6:30pm and end at 8:30pm. the "creative dc" that is being shaped will not include let alone reflect you or me. don't be fooled.
where: department of employment services, 4058 minnesota avenue, ne; transit: minnesota avenue metro station (orange line). learn more about the cultural plan at dcculturalplan.org. thank you.
because self care is in itself revolutionary. // the last year has kicked my arse. but don't worry, i kicked back!!! now, i don't have many vices. i don't drink. i don't smoke. i don't party. but i shop a lot of vintage but they're business expenses, right😉. anyway, i understand myself enough to know that i feel replenished when i make time to create (art + environments + writings) and when i spend time with people who inspire me. in one week, i made the conscious time to share space with some dynamic innovators i am fortunate to call friends. creative entrepreneurs changing the world one idea at a time. they add colour. context. passion. flavour. we celebrated each other's accomplishments, danced, ate, and laughed incessantly. this morning, as i start my day at @nomadyard, i give thanks for them. it's a powerful day🌑, and i am overwhelmed with gratitude. be great. be grateful. #xodvf
