Since the beginning of their collaboration, Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin chose to increasingly incorporate digital technology in the creation of their images. However, to the two photographers, technology was never a sterile and righteous tool but rather a way to create content and reflect on contemporary society’s constantly transforming sensations and emotions. In a way, Inez & Vinoodh could be described as sci-fi writers in the best sense of the term. They imagine a future that is very similar to the present, altered but not wretched. Looking at their work is like reading a Philip Dick novel, where the ordinary world is dominated by invisible and supernatural emotions. This approach comes into play in the exhibition dedicated to their work that takes place in the Prince’s Apartments of Palazzo Reale in Milan, where their most iconic images will be transformed into large, hand-painted billboards. Digital images are recreated manually in a Back to the Future kind of process. What emerges is an unexpected dialogue between high and low tech.
