Roses are red, violets are blue, did you know it was poetry month! Now you do! .
.
.
In honor of #nationalpoetrymonth , we will be sharing a series of poems from contemporary Long Island poets and artwork. Inspired by our exhibition Walt Whitman’s Arcadia: Long Island Through the Eyes of a Poet & Painter, on view until September 2nd, which connects Whitman’s poetry to art from our collection, our #paintersandpoets campaign will feature local poets who are still writing today!
To kick start our poetry & art series, we will travel back to the mid-19th century with Shepard Alonzo Mount, one of our famed Mount brothers. A man of many talents, Shepard found inspiration for not only his painting, but also his writing in his surroundings. Transcribed below are the last two stanzas from his poem “The Old Double Door,” published on November 14, 1867 in Stony Brook’s newspaper, The Independent Press: .
.
.
O'er the dark gray roof, and trailed to the ground,
The wild trumpet creepers profusely abound
Studded all o'er with their waving flowers,
Where the humming-birds sport in the scarlet bowers;
To this beautiful home of my infant life,
When my heart grows tired of its toilsome strife,
Then weary I come to see once more
The forms of the past at our old hall door.
Faithful old door, I no more may renew
The joys of the past so familiar to you;
The dearest of all, she returns here no more
To brighten the shadows of clouds gone before.
No elastic rubber, nor springs of steel,
Ever force you against the stranger's heel;
And thus-and-ever-I trust you will be,
Thrown open to all who may journey to thee.
The Old Double Door, the broad panel door,
And the long iron hinges it turned on of yore.

Evelina Mount (1837-1920) also known as “Nina” was born and raised in Stony Brook. She was the daughter of the eldest artist Mount brother, Henry Smith Mount. She studied under her uncle renowned genre painter William Sidney Mount. Her artwork mainly consisted of landscapes and floral still life paintings. She painted on canvas, panel, and on ceramic dishware. Although she did not sell many of her pieces, she was one of Long Island’s first professional women artists. As #womenshistorymonth comes to a close let us bring influential woman from our past and our present into light and let them inspire those young men and women of our future. Please check our twitter page and the @smithsonian #BecauseOfHerStory to learn about more women in American history.

Happy first day of spring!! Here is a poem Titled, “Spring” written by Shepard Alonzo Mount during the c. 1850. The poem is transcribed below! .
.
.
.
Spring
The melancholy Spring is here;
With fragrant blossoms, bright and fair;
And singing birds, remote and near,
In thrilling music, charm the air.
To pleasing sounds now floating by,
New forms of harmony attend;
We feel the power of beauty nigh,
When hymns of grateful hearts ascend. `Tis good to feel the soothing spell,
Which o'er the hills and valleys lay;
Where timely showers have left their smiles
Upon the cheeks of tearful May.
The tender green, that wins our sight
And makes us tread the meadow o'er;
The chasing shadows, dark and light,
Remind me of the long years before.
On reverse side
I wish I could enjoy it now,
The ever kind, returning Spring;
As when a boy, I gave the plough,
The furrows turned a joyful fling;
And wiped the sweat from off my brow
With cooling leaves the hedge supplied:
But why should I remember now
Those youthful scenes to me denied.
The sun is setting, and my steps
Are lessening in their numbers here;
And memory brings the mournful lay
Of love, and grief, and funeral year
These sources of dejected life
The hand of dusky death hath given;
May God direct, the closing strife!
And give me hope of Spring in heaven
Shepard A. Mount

The Nassakeag One Room School House was built by Frederick A. Smith in 1877. Originally located in South Setauket, the schoolhouse was actively used until 1910 and served approximately thirty students annually, ranging from 5 to 15 years of age. The building was moved to LIM in 1956 and opened for our visitors. If you’re here on a weekday, you’ll often find Long Island students inside the schoolhouse with one of our educators, getting hands-on experience of what it was like to attend a one-room school house in the 19th century. .
