This is the final post for my Holiday House Instagram takeover! Thank you for letting me share the joy I had in writing 'Nixie Ness: Cooking Star' and trying out the recipes. Today is the official book birthday for Nixie: the date the book finally goes on sale wherever books are sold. So I’m going to sign off now and put a birthday candle in a Morning Glory muffin in Nixie’s honor (the recipe is included in the back of the book, and they are truly delicious muffins!). I will also give a celebratory dog biscuit to my dog Tanky, who served as the taste tester for the dog biscuits (he gobbled them up with great enthusiasm, but I have to say he is not a fussy eater). And then I’ll get busy working on 'Vera Vance: Comics Star' and 'Lucy Lopez: Coding Star' – up next!

The most delicious thing Nixie makes in 'Nixie Ness: Cooking Star,' in my opinion, is the Morning Glory Muffins she bakes during the first week of cooking camp (a week devoted to making healthy lunch-box options). They are stuffed full of healthy ingredients: grated carrots and apples, raisins, sunflower seeds, orange juice, whole-wheat flour, and more. My mouth waters just looking at this picture! The most challenging thing Nixie makes at cooking camp is Saag Aloo, from India, for the camp’s closing Trip around the World banquet. There are not many saag recipes simple enough for third graders to make. So I put out a plaintive plea for assistance on Facebook and received a suitable – and luscious – recipe from brilliant children’s book author @varshawrites. Yay for social media!

My favorite scene in 'Nixie Ness: Cooking Star' is when Nixie and her fellow campers make pet treats: dog biscuits, cat cookies, and suet for bird feeders. In the book, the kids use bone-shaped cookie cutters for the dog biscuits and fish-shaped cookie cutters for the cat cookies. When I tested the recipes at home, I didn’t have cookie cutters in those shapes, so I had to do my best with what I had on hand. On my first try with the dog biscuits, I used a circular cutter – and they turned out TERRIBLE! I had rolled the dough out half an inch thick, as my recipe instructed, and the biscuits were truly hideous. But then I tried again, rolling out the dough a quarter-inch thick, and used star-shaped cookie cutters (to fit the series title, 'After-school Superstars'). Don’t you think they look vastly better this time

The plus of writing by hand is that I can write anywhere. The minus of writing by hand is that I have to decipher my tiny, scribbled, almost unreadable handwriting. I always use the same kind of paper – narrow-ruled, no margins – and the same kind of pen: a Pilot Razor-Point fine-tipped black maker pen. Here is the manuscript page of ‘Nixie Ness: Cooking Star’ where Nixie is making the Morning Glory Muffins. I also do all my plotting and planning on those same pads with that same pen. You can see where I’m trying to figure out various schemes for Nixie to keep (or win back) her best friend, Grace, from rival Elyse – and where I realize that although I’ve thought of several good ideas for FAILED strategies, I don’t yet have a single idea for one that might actually work! . .

Much as I love writing in coffee shops, libraries, gardens, and other people’s houses, I do most of my writing at home. I wrote almost all of 'Nixie Ness: Cooking Star' while lying on the couch in my little upstairs studio. For most of my career as a writer, I had another career as well, as a professor of philosophy at the University of Colorado at Boulder. So I formed the habit of doing my creative writing for an hour a day, from 5:00-6:00 in the morning, timed with my beloved cherry-wood hourglass. An hour is so little – just enough time for me to write one page. But trust me, if you write for an hour every single day, those pages add up.

I love writing in all different kinds of places. Luckily, I write my first drafts by hand, so I can truly write anywhere. It’s scary to write the very first page of the very first chapter of a brand-new book, so I have a policy of writing those first pages somewhere extra-special, preferably in the company of dear friends. So I wrote the first page of 'Nixie Ness: Cooking Star' at a “write-in” at the home of my writer friend, Jean Menoni Reidy. The last page isn’t so scary for me, as I have so much momentum at that point, but it’s extra-satisfying if I can combine the bliss of writing “THE END” with the bliss of writing in some beautiful spot. So I wrote the last page of 'Nixie Ness: Cooking Star' at a gazebo at the @denverbotanic.

Hi, everyone! I’m author Claudia Mills & I’m taking over Holiday House’s Instagram this afternoon to celebrate the release of 'Nixie Ness: Cooking Star,' first in my new chapter-book series set in an after-school program: 'After-school Superstars.' After decades of writing heaps & heaps of school stories (I adore school!), I decided it was time for me to explore the wondrous world of after-school programs, where kids can come together to learn about cool things like . . . cooking! Nixie heads off to cooking camp when her work-at-home mom gets a new job. Nixie loves cooking, so she’d be super-excited about camp, except that her best friend, Grace, who has always come to Nixie’s house after school, is NOT going to be at cooking camp with her, but instead will be spending afternoons with “best-friend stealer” Elyse. So the book is both a cooking story & a friendship story. And how lucky I am to have the extravagantly talented Grace Zong as my illustrator!
