“My works have been influenced by my mentors, Mr. Ryosetsu Imai and Mr. Yuichi Inoue. I believe that the spontaneous power with which I work is largely owing to the explosive power developed by track-and-field training (in the 100 meters) which I continued for 13 years including my college days.” – Hiroshi Wada

For Wada, calligraphy is a medium with the power to bring joy and playfulness to others. He believes each of his characters embodies meaning. A meaning he hopes is not only conveyed to, but felt by, those observing, leaving them with a sense of relaxation, reflection, and hopefully, peace.

“My way to get over my biggest fear of horses was to paint them. When I was in my early 30’s, I was diagnosed with a disease and told I was dying. Through many spiritual experiences recovering from this disease, I came to believe in Angels. The intemperate mind, the wild eyes, the warm heart and the tenderness of horses is what I try to capture in my work. My palette consists of bold, raw color contrasting against stark light to convey a sense of energy and power. I am trying to capture the essence and soul of every horse that I paint, particularly in their eyes.” – Dede Schuhmacher. @dedeschuhmacher

“My work is influenced by the light and structure of the objects. It plays with shadows and illumination, background and front, separates into layers and re-composes those to a new imagination taking the observer into a silent sensitive environment. If I am asked to find similarities to my work in other areas of art I would compares my work with music, with the waves of sounds and changing instrumentation.” – Caspar Baum.

Carefully dividing his canvas into portions that correspond in both size and density, Baum avoids creating aggressive and unbalanced compositions, instead creating work that is calming for the viewer; depicting the atmosphere, stillness, and tranquility he experienced while traveling through Eastern Asia. Baum’s paintings share his artistic journey, path of discovery, and his fascination with cultural exchange.

Yoshiki Uchida creates his work using Kanamono, which translated, simply means hardware. Uchida has created a Kanamono alphabet of forty-eight types of objects such as pliers, screws, etc. “In recent years, Kanamono Art has been linked with traditional Japanese technology. Due to the collaboration with craftsmen from all over Japan, there have been various interpretations of this art form. Often, the very inventive world born from Kanamono balances with technology and a sense of commitment from proud Japanese craftsmen. I feel fortunate to represent part of traditional craftsmanship through Kanamono Art in a modern world where this trade is declining and have a strong desire to see it succeed in many various forms.” – Yoshiki Uchida

Born in China, and having lived in Japan, Canada, and the United States, Suqun Zhang's multicultural background is prevalent in his blend of eastern and western artistic perspectives. Zhang integrates rich landscapes and jungle life in a mixture of realism and abstraction, usually in Chinese ink, gouache, and watercolor on traditional Chinese rice paper. His recent works are heavily informed by his interest in wildlife conservation. After learning of the great number of tigers killed illegally each year, Zhang realized he could perhaps use his artistry to awaken people’s awareness to the dwindling numbers of tigers. “I love to paint tigers on large scaled paper, so it enables me to capture the essence of this great animal and yet preserve its imposing elegance. I always aim to create something that is not only appropriated by people with the same cultural background, but also appreciated universally, regardless of such cultural diversity.” – Suqun Zhang

“My paintings, mainly in oil, are expressive and focus on color. I work with various brushes and materials, such as pieces of wood, as well as old and unused mechanical tools, which provide me the ability to create different textures on the canvas in an unconventional way. My recent works are abstract and are my interpretation of the urban and natural landscape in which I live. The bright colors reflect the sun's vividness that exists many months in my location. I compose my work from memory of actual places, events and feelings, and apply each color emotionally.” – Meir Raz

#Opening Reception: Join us tonight, from 6-8 pm, for the opening of Hiroshi Wada: The First New York Solo Exhibition and In and Out of the Garden.
_
The calligraphy exhibition and the group show will be on view at the gallery through May 31.
_
Japanese artist Hiroshi Wada is a calligraphy painter. Wada studied the ancient tradition of “shodo”—brush and ink drawing on rice paper— with a great master of this art form. While his art retains the spontaneity and playfulness of a child’s drawing, in fact it takes years of apprenticeship to achieve their effortless look. Wada’s aim, however, is not the traditional “sho.”
_
In and Out of the Garden is a collective exhibition featuring work by nine different artists with mediums ranging from painting to mixed-media to installation. Natural forms, expressive compositions, and bold color palettes create an energetic narrative focused on the exhilarating and intoxicating reality of the human experience. Featured artists: Osvaldo Bacman, Caspar Baum, Dante Biss-Grayson, Guanzhong Ge, Dana Ingesson, Meir Raz, Dede Schuhmacher, Yoshiki Uchida, Suqun Zhang

New to #ARTmine: “My arts practice has, for many years, focused on examining the notion of the ‘sublime’ as it relates to my experiences of the landscapes of regional New South Wales, Australia. I paint in a realistic style and intend to capture the intense color and light of these ‘sublime’ moments, expressed in big, sweeping, dramatic skies. In my artwork I re-examine the nineteenth century Romantic aesthetic notion that divides the world into categories and differentiates the ‘sublime’ from the ‘picturesque’ or ‘pastoral’. Additionally, I try to paint landscapes and skies that could be viewed as 'timeless'. It is part of my aim to create a sense of intrigue, drama or anticipation that something is about to happen” – Sandra Guy.

Born in Argentina, Osvaldo Bacman grew up across the street from The School of Fine Art, of the National University of La Plata, where he was able to nurture his interest in art from an early age, enrolling in countless courses in drawing and painting. He eventually became drawn to Cubism and Concrete art, first working primarily in wood, passé partout, and soft foam, painted in acrylic. More recently, he’s discovered ornamentation, and its ability to be used as an expression of history through its significance to cultures. “The Geometry is an independent expression that has a life of its own, impregnated with rhythm, movement and continuous change, creating images that appear and disappear, making the invisible visible. My desire is to offer the viewer the possibility of confronting my work, of observing it carefully to continually discover new images that emerge, giving a rhythmic movement and life to the work and be amazed to make visible the invisible.” – Osvaldo Bacman

“Oil painting and aquarelle painting with palette knives are methods that I have picked recently. These techniques suit my temperament very well. As an artist, I carry many images within me. The aim of my artwork is to create a dialogue with the viewer. My artworks are expressions of my emotions, experiences, and lessons learned. My motives are often abstract and I find it exciting to watch an artwork develop during the process, layer by layer, color on color, coming together as a beautiful piece of art. Painting gives me the opportunity to allow me true self to come out in a freeway, with pure joy for creativity. Painting has always my truest passion. I devote a great part of my time to painting and I have regular exhibitions, both locally and internationally.” – Dana Ingesson

With his art, Guanzhong Ge plays the part of societal bystander, independent of bias, preconceptions, and prejudices. He deals in sensitive themes, although not gratuitously, preferring restraint and self-sustainability, providing viewers the opportunity to rely on their own psychological projections. “My work is a mixture of synthetic materials. I use ink, watercolor and mineral pigments to paint on paper. In my works, there will be no bloody scenes and naked violence. I will make people maintain some kind of restraint and self-sustainability in the painting. For some sensitive topics, I do not want to directly express some personal opinions, and I prefer to record my own feelings as bystanders or eyewitnesses. My care for the world and my vision for the future are not pessimistic and negative, but I am not entirely optimistic. I prefer to use a variety of hidden language and hints to explain my point of view. The hobby of grand composition, magnificent colors and complicated details is my almost paranoid interest. In short, the pursuit of personal characteristics and independent thinking on society is my goal.” – Guanzhong Ge
